I won't abandon the blog immediately, but HSW will aggregate a whole lot more stuff and make it more available to anyone interested in "Weather, surf, and climate forecasts for Island recreation and businesses". &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;It is media-heavy so may take a while to load on older machines with dial-up.  And there are a few typos and layout issues that need more attention, but our guy busted his okole and we still missed our deadline. Check it out and let us know what you think. Looks a lot like Sun even with a different wind. Some isolated convective afternoon showers and seabreezes. Trades slowly returning Tues.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;There were a couple of very marginal bumps from the NW on the horizon but too small to bother with. S'ly swell is small and changing direction. All buoys are dark at this hour for some reason. I expect a long-boardable background from the SSW this week. Moderate trades will return on Tues. During this down time, afternoon convective showers become more likely, along with afternoon seabreezes. We'll play it by ear. It may be short-loved. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;Katrina is on the way to a Cat 2-3 hurricane making landfall in the FL panhandle late Sun.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;There are minor bumps due from the N and NW early next week, but barely worth mentioning.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;A new S'ly swell is registering on buoys 51oo2 and 51004. Trades are fading to variable for the weekend, which will tilt to an afternoon convective shower pattern with afternoon seabreezes.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;A tiny bump from the NW is over the horizon for late this weekend, and a head high + bump from the N early next week.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;The S'n Hemi continues to stir to life with a small S bump due this weekend, and more background swell spread out over next week from the Roaring 40s and Furious 50s. Models show the first significant S swell in months developing in our swell window next Tues, for a crunchy S swell in ~ 11-12 days.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;TS Katrina is reving up just offshore from S FL. There is still a lot of divergence about the exact track and development of this storm, but I think it's safe to say that this will be a big rain event for S FL. In fact, I've noted torrential rains recently and currently in E Asia, across C'l Mexico, scattered across the Caribbean and in parts of Mid and E Europe. There's been a lot of scattered disturbed weather throughout the Caribbean and Gulf. The current models are very undecided about the future course and development, unlike recent well-behaved systems. It could reach S FL early this weekend, then either continue into the Gulf and plague the Panhandle area again, or move up the E Coast. Winds will reach a minor peak Wed, then fade slightly.  We are in the transitional period when trades get really lazy into fall.  There will be minor isolated showers in these trades after nearly a week of dry weather.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;There was a little peaky short-period bump today from the N/NE today which should fade overnight. (See &lt;strong&gt;Surf &amp; Weather Alert 8/19 AM&lt;/strong&gt; below.) Some of these marginal swells are "too small to call".&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;The small S bump is also fading, but we expect more by the weekend. Local  weather looks uneventful; postcard weather for the next few days.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;Hurricane Hilary is churning away SW of Baja and near its peak.  Big surf there at S'ly exposures.  It is expected to wander WNW and fade, with no effect on our windward windwaves.  Little swell for CA from Hilary and only minor waves late this week.  One of the main models shows another TS following Hilary late this week.  It looks like the tropical activity has shifted to the E Pac at least briefly.  GIFS shows another tropical cyclone in the mid Atlantic in a few days with no threat to land.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;Locally there should be a small head high + bump at S'ly exposures late Mon, with more very small waves late this week and weekend. No effect for the Islands. Little or no effect on CA and what there is will be next weekend. The cloud pattern is a weak "screaming eagle" - more like a chirping pigeon.  Windward showers are also likely to pop up in other areas as the center of the disturbance passes W, S of the Big Island.  This is typical behavior.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;Trades will fall off to light and variable later this weekend until ~ Tues, due to a minor low/front forming N of the Islands.  Another hint of seasonal change. Should be mostly sunny on leeward sides. Most of the related clouds will pass south of the Big Island ~ Sat, with a few showers possible on windward sides.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;The S Hemi is stirring slightly, just in time for fall.  We should see a small bump in the S'ly background early next week, with more small swell action to follow. Currently, there are broken to overcast skies along or just ustream of all windward sides.  These clouds look mostly dry and should burn off to a partly to mostly sunny day for all islands.   There will be minor islolated trade wind showers this week.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;Farther upstream, TS Fernanda is fading to nothing. With light trades Fri, there could be a little afternoon convection over far leeward sides of islands.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the E Pac, Hurricane Fernanda and TS Greg are fading. In the Atlantic, Irene will probably veer away from the E Coast as the 15 day model predicted.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There was a sneaker swell from the W yesterday, barely above background. It was on buoy 51001 but extreme small W (this was even WSW) ain't worth worrying about. It's almost pau. The windward mountain barrier and the opposing upper level W'lies (subtropical jet, TUTT, whatever), tend to trap this stuff on windward sides, causing cloudy conditions and drizzle.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;There are also brief, isolated T showers or maybe just &lt;em&gt;cumuli nimbi &lt;/em&gt;firing in the leeward plumes of some islands.  A little tricky and unpredictable but generally fair and sunny on leeward sides. Probably won't happen, at least like the 6" accumulations that occurred over the weekend.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;Moderate trades continue and will decrease to light near variable later this week.  This brings up the possibility of afternoon convection when the trades fade. Right now, trades seem dry for most trade wind exposures and the week should get off to a sunny start.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;There is a hint of small N'ly swell brewing again later this week, due ~ Sun. The models show this pocket of moisture lingering  in place and reinforced by a similar system early next week, so the likelihood of showers affecting the windward Big Island (and maybe other windward sides) will continue for several days. Fri should be mostly sunny.  Tiny surf for it seems forever; head high windwaves.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;All models are in fair agreement that a weak tropical disturbance SE of the Big Island will drift slowly W over the weekend, causing showers and possibly heavy local accumulations over the windward sides of the S'n islands from mid Sat to mid Mon.  The windward Big Island is closest to the weather, especially the Puna Coast.  (See mention and pix of the ITCZ in previous posts.)  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;The N'n islands will probably not be affected by this system and I'm not even sure it will affect the S'n islands.  Trade winds will fade to light E'ly next week.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;In the Atlantic, a disorganized TS is wandering near Bermuda and expected to lift out to the NE.   A tropical wave that drifted off the W Coast of Africa has failed to develop.  The 15 day model still shows a hurricane in the Atlantic in ~ 10-12 days but headed towards the Canadian Maritimes or even E of there.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;I watched a NOAA/NWS presentation this week that had upgraded their warning of a severe Atlantic/Caribbean hurricane season, based on the big start it got in July.  Far be it for me to directly contradict these highly paid experts, but for years I've watched government forecasters of everything from weather to finances to national security fall for simple linear exptrapolation of apparent current trends.  They almost always miss and overreact. It still looks a little wet.  Trades winds will continue unbroken and moderate.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;I haven't paid close attention to the S'n Hemi except to note that nothing is really happening there for the Islands.  The Christmas Island buoy did show some SSW swell action Thurs, but it looks small and will probably pass us without effect.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;A small NNW bump is still on tap for ~ middle of next week.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;Checking the old MRF 15 day N Hemi forecast, there is no hint of tropical disturbance until mid-Aug anywhere, at least as a threat to land.  That's the way it goes. This is the driest time of year and it looks like beach weather for the week.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;The only change I see in the N Pac is the beginnings of Typhoon season in the far west.  Moderate trades here locally slowly fading to lighter trades during the week and next weekend.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;The S swell is also fading to near flat. Moderate trades. Since not much happening in our weather...&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;...our local S buoys are responding in a promising manner to the latest series of small SSW swells.  The next few days should at least be better than the last 5 days, with overhead waves extending through midweek and beyond. Expect a few minor overnight showers. This week will see seasonally moderate trades and the typical trade wind showers, mostly night/morning windward/mauka. A few can be expected to pop up over the N'n islands but it looks dry and nearly cloudless at this point.  Moderate trades.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;The Christmas Island bouy continues to register new S/SSW swell so we could see that S'ly background creep up late Mon.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;Hurricane Emily is about to hit Yucatan.  It will be interesting to see what the interaction of land and upper lever steering currents do to this storm after it tangles with landfall.  The options range from TS winds in S'n Texas (and rain) to hurricane winds on the Gulf Coast of Mexico to...not much at all. There was a freakish isolated heavy shower that flared briefly on the leeward slopes of the Big Island in the saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. It was associated with a small upper level impulse and is an example of how tricky and impossible the weather can be.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;Otherwise, just moderate trades and scattered upstream clouds, mostly dry.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;font-size:130%;"&gt;The Christmas Island buoy registered a minor S'ly pulse today, just enough to keep a smaller background going this weekend. Next week looks a little better.
